Not Your Average Family Photos: A Halloween Session

When you think of family photos, you probably picture coordinated outfits, beautiful fall foliage, and everyone smiling nicely at the camera. You probably don’t picture five people wearing pumpkins on their heads playing baseball. These are definitely not your average family photos.

As a Nashua NH family photographer, I’ve photographed plenty of traditional family portraits over the years. Matching outfits, beautiful locations, and everyone looking at the camera. I love all of it.

But sometimes a family photography session comes along that’s a little outside the box. Or, in this case, inside the pumpkin head.

And honestly, I’m not complaining.

When Halloween Meets Family Photos

Fall is one of the busiest times of year for family photography in Southern New Hampshire. Everyone wants those beautiful autumn colors, and for good reason. New England really knows how to show off in October.

But this session took advantage of that gorgeous fall backdrop in a completely different way.

Instead of coordinating sweaters and boots, we had pumpkin heads, baseball jerseys, and a baseball field.

Not your average family photos, I will give you that. However, it was one of the funnest.

The combination of Halloween and baseball made for some pretty entertaining images. And while these probably aren’t the photos Grandma was expecting for her Christmas card, I think they deserve a spot on the wall anyway.

Creative Family Photos Ideas for Families With Older Kids

Here’s something I’ve noticed after years of photographing families: the older the kids get, the harder it can be to convince everyone that family photos are a good idea.

Little kids can usually be bribed with snacks.

Teenagers require a slightly more sophisticated negotiation strategy.

But family photography doesn’t have to stop just because your kids are getting older. Sometimes the trick is finding something everyone can get excited about.

For families looking for unique family photo ideas, incorporating a favorite sport, hobby, holiday, or family tradition can be a great place to start.

Maybe your family spends every weekend at the baseball field. Maybe Halloween is practically a national holiday in your house. Or maybe you just think putting pumpkins on everyone’s heads sounds like a fantastic way to spend an afternoon.

I’m not here to judge.

Actually, I’m probably going to encourage it.

Family Photos Should Reflect Your Family

One of the things I love about photographing families is that every family has its own personality.

Some are quiet and reserved. Some are loud and silly. Some are incredibly organized.

And some apparently own five pumpkin heads.

There’s no rule that says every family photography session needs to look exactly the same.

While I specialize in traditional, posed family portraits, I also think there’s room for creativity. Sometimes that means bringing along a favorite sports jersey, including the family dog, or choosing a location that has special meaning.

And sometimes it means turning a baseball game into a Halloween photo shoot.

The important thing is creating images that you’ll enjoy looking back on years from now.

Because someday those teenagers will be grown, and you’ll have photographic evidence of that one time everyone agreed to wear pumpkins on their heads.

Honestly, that’s priceless.
