Nashua Cake Smash Photographer | First Birthday Photos

Nashua NH Cake Smash Photographer

Cake smash sessions are chaos. The cute kind. The kind where your baby sticks their whole hand in frosting and then immediately questions their life choices. Some babies go all in. Face first. No regrets. Others poke the cake like, “Is this a trick?” Both are perfect. Both are hilarious. As a Nashua cake smash Photographer I can attest that both make the best photos.

Here’s the good news. You don’t have to do anything. I’ve got it handled. I help with the setup. The colors. The whole vibe. You just show up with your baby and maybe a backup outfit (trust me on that). It will get messy. It will be a little wild. And you will laugh more than you expect. Then you go home… and I clean up the frosting. Everyone wins.

How Do I Choose a Cake Smash Theme?

One of the first questions parents ask when planning a cake smash session is what theme they should choose. The good news is that your baby’s first birthday photos don’t need an elaborate theme to be adorable. Sometimes a simple color palette, a few balloons and a really cute one-year-old are more than enough. And let’s be honest, there’s a decent chance your baby is going to be far more interested in crawling away from the set than appreciating the decorations anyway.

When planning cake smash photography in my Nashua, NH studio, I recommend choosing something that feels like your family. That might mean coordinating the setup with your baby’s first birthday party, using colors you love, or going all-in on a fun theme. I’ve photographed everything from simple setups to more detailed themes, and both can photograph beautifully.

Should the Cake Smash Match the First Birthday Party?

It absolutely can, but it doesn’t have to. Coordinating your cake smash theme with the birthday party can give you photos that fit perfectly with invitations and decorations. But if you’ve already spent approximately 700 hours planning a first birthday party, you are also completely allowed to choose something simple for the photos.

Simple Cake Smash Ideas

A cake smash doesn’t need dozens of props. Balloons, or a simple backdrop can create a clean setup that keeps the attention where it belongs—on your baby. Simple cake smash setups also tend to age well because the photos aren’t overwhelmed by decorations.

Themed Cake Smash Ideas

For parents who want something more elaborate, a favorite book, animal, season, hobby or birthday-party theme can be a great starting point. I’ve photographed a variety of themed first birthday sessions, which means parents don’t have to figure everything out completely on their own.

What Should My Baby Wear for a Cake Smash Session?

When choosing cake smash outfits, I always recommend keeping the setup and colors in mind. Simple outfits tend to photograph best and keep the attention on your baby. Diaper covers, bloomers, suspenders, rompers and simple dresses are all great options. Try to avoid large logos or busy patterns that might compete with the cake smash setup.

Many parents also choose a more traditional outfit for a few first birthday photos before bringing out the cake. This gives you some classic one year old portraits along with the messy cake smash photos. And don’t worry too much about finding the perfect outfit—the chances of it ending the session covered in frosting are pretty high anyway.

Fancy Black and White Cake Smash

Pretty whimsical Boho cake smash

It’s hard to believe it’s been six years since I last saw this family! You may remember big sister A from her “My Little Sunshine” cake smash. I was thrilled when mom reached out again for A’s baby sister’s session. She wanted something simple, with just a touch of fall. As a cake smash photographer in Nashua NH, I’m so happy with how it all turned out. What a cozy, colorful, and fun filled first-birthday shoot!

Dinosaur themed Cake Smash and Hot Cocoa Bath

I was so excited when one of my all-time favorite cake smasher’s little brother reached his one-year milestone. This birthday boy was on the move the second he stepped into the studio. He humored us just long enough to try the chair, even though my flash was far more interesting to him.

By the time we reached cake smash time, his patience had run out. I’m told he loves cake, but today he had no time for it! Luckily, the cocoa bath stole the show. He had even more fun splashing around than exploring the studio. By the end, he had definitely earned his nickname: “Messy Wessy.”

Deer One – Wild One – Woodland Creatures Cake Smash Photographer – Nashua, NH

All my Covid babies are turning one, and I was so excited when this little guy’s mom contacted me for his birthday session. As a cake smash photographer in Nashua NH, it felt amazing to finally have the studio open again.

He started off sleepy and calm, happily exploring the studio and soaking up the attention. Even when I worked out a few setup kinks, he didn’t mind a bit. But once it was cake time, this laid-back little guy became a whirlwind of fun.

The sugar kicked in, and soon we were cleaning cake off the walls. Baby J even “helped” with the cleanup by splashing more water than expected from his bubble bath! I always tell parents that a messy studio is the best sign of a successful cake smash session. This session was no exception.

If you’re looking for a cake smash photographer in Nashua NH I would love to capture them for you.

First Year Down – Football

This baby boy came ready to play for his “first down” football themed cake smash. Just look at that game face! He started with some stretching and burpees to warm up. Then after only moments of game play he triumphantly spiked the football (cake) in the end zone before going for the field goal. Okay, so he did choke, miss the field goal, step on the cake and the then cry but what do you want, he is one. After a long game he decided to hit the ice bath to get that blood moving and recuperate. All just a day in the life of the biggest stud in the infant football league. And where do you think he went after the game…Disney world of course! His big brother must have taught him everything he knows.

Mr. ONEderful – Blue Gold and navy Bow ties

I can’t believe this guy is one! Then again, it seems totally plausible since his first year was one of the longest of my life. This guy was my last newborn baby before the pandemic covid-19 crazy-ness. It has not been fun lugging all my gear around for in-home sessions. It definitely has trying to get babies to smile while wearing a mask. And it’s been downright difficult resisting the urge to be a hands-on poser. In the end I believe it has made be a better photographer. Not to mention seeing this guy grow has been a highlight in a year with few highlights. So, this “Mr. ONEdeful” cake smash was a pretty perfect way to end our bump to baby package.

Wild One – Little Dinosaur – Blue, Green and Orange

I always love creating fun and colorful sets for first birthday sessions. This dinosaur themed cake smash turned out absolutely adorable. Mom contacted me ahead of time with her idea for a simple dinosaur theme. Together we planned a setup filled with bright blue, green, and orange tones. The colors worked perfectly for this little guy, and his dinosaur-scale cake matched the theme beautifully.

Planning creative sets like this is one of my favorite parts of being a cake smash photographer in Nashua NH. Every family brings their own ideas. I love helping turn those ideas into a fun and memorable first birthday photography session.
