Getting everyone together for an extended family photography session is kind of like trying to herd cats… if the cats all had different work schedules, kids in sports, and someone who lives three states away.

This recent session took place at the family’s home before it was sold. Instead of meeting at a park or a studio, they chose the place where birthdays were celebrated, holidays were hosted, and countless everyday moments became lifelong memories.

Honestly? It made the photos even more meaningful.

There is nothing like the first beach session of the season! It was a little chilly on this night but luckily these kiddos weren’t phased by it. Mom asked me if her kiddos were more uncooperative than others and the answer is a definitive “NO.” The beach is a gorgeous location and always yields beautiful images. Still, nothing I do is crueler than asking young kids to sit feet from the ocean. They can’t play in it. So, as long as kids are willing to join in (even reluctantly) I am having a good night!

I love that this extended family does yearly photos together when Nana and Papa when are in town. Photos with grandparents are probably the one weak part in my photography game, when it comes to my own family. They all have such a unique relationship with each grandparent and I need to make it a point to start documenting it more. These portrait sessions are so flexible and can be used for so many different occasions.
