What Happens If My Baby Won’t Sleep?

If you’ve ever found yourself frantically Googling “What happens if my baby won’t sleep?” at 2:17 a.m. while bouncing on an exercise ball with a newborn in one arm and drinking cold coffee with the other… welcome. You’re in good company. As a Hudson newborn photographer, I hear this concern all the time before sessions.

“My baby never sleeps.”

“They only sleep on me.”

“They’re fussy all day.”

“Should we reschedule?”

The short answer? Usually… no.

In fact, I recently had a session that perfectly sums up why newborn photography is equal parts planning, patience, and complete surrender to tiny humans who couldn’t care less about my carefully organized shot list.

Spoiler alert: it ended up being every bit as adorable as you would hope for.

The Newborn Baby Who Kept Us Guessing during her Hudson, MA Photoshoot

This sweet little one arrived looking absolutely perfect. Seriously. Super squishy cheeks, adorable little rolls, and the sweetest expressions – a Hudson newborn photographer dream. Big brother showed up ready to be the world’s best helper, and he absolutely nailed every sibling photo we hoped for.

Honestly, when sibling photos go well, I feel like I’ve won the lottery.

Mom and Dad had the relaxed aura that only comes with experienced parents that have seen a child projectile poop across a lactation consultation room. Big brother was cooperative, and baby gave us so many beautiful sleepy moments. We checked off almost every image we’d planned.

You’d look through the gallery or hear this story and probably think everything went exactly according to plan.

Not so fast…

Baby’s tummy had big plans for us.

When Tummies Have Their Own Agenda – Hudson Newborn Photography

Sometimes babies are sleepy because they’re comfortable.

Sometimes they’re awake because they’re hungry.

And sometimes they’re awake because their little digestive system is working overtime.

This little one had some serious tummy troubles.

There were lots of wiggles. Lots of grunts. Lots of comforting breaks.

And let’s just say… my washing machine definitely earned its paycheck afterward.

There was poop.

There was pee.

There was poop immediately after cleaning up pee. And then, oh ya, there was more poop.

There may have been a moment where I questioned whether I had enough blankets left to finish the session.

Thankfully, as Mom pointed out, I have blankets and accessories in almost every color in the rainbow.

And backups for the backups in all those colors.

Because babies.

So… What If My Baby Won’t Sleep?

Here’s what I want every parent to know:

A baby who doesn’t sleep perfectly does not mean your session is ruined.

I’ve photographed babies who slept for three straight hours.

I’ve photographed babies who needed to be fed every 20 minutes.

I’ve photographed babies who wanted to stretch, wiggle, grunt, snack, cuddle, and repeat.

Every single one of them has been different.

Newborn sessions are intentionally scheduled with plenty of extra time because babies aren’t on anyone’s timeline except their own.

We take feeding breaks.

We cuddle.

We swaddle.

We soothe.

We clean up the messes.

We wait.

And then we start the cycle all over again.

Sometimes we laugh because the baby has peed on the fifth blanket of the morning.

It’s all part of the job. And after four of my own kids it is one I feel very prepared for.

Perfection Isn’t the Goal – Hudson, MA Photographer

Parents often apologize when their baby is fussy, gassy or leaves a variety of bodily fluids over me and all my stuff.

Please don’t.

Your baby isn’t giving me a hard time.

They’re having a hard time.

Whether it’s gas, a growth spurt, cluster feeding, or just one of those days, we work with what your baby needs in that moment.

Ironically, the sessions that feel the most chaotic often end up producing the images families treasure the most.

This recent session is proof of that.

Despite the tummy troubles, despite the laundry mountain waiting for me afterward, despite every unexpected interruption, we created a gallery full of beautiful memories.

You’d never know there was complete diaper-related chaos happening just outside the frame.

(That’s one of the perks of hiring someone who’s been peed on more times than they can count.)

Trust the Process

If you’re worried because your newborn “doesn’t sleep,” take a deep breath.

You don’t need a perfect baby for beautiful newborn photos.

You just need a photographer who’s prepared for real life.

Messes happen.

Babies cry.

Parents worry.

And somehow, in between all of that, we create images you’ll treasure forever.

Even if I have to wash every blanket in the studio afterward.

Honestly, that’s just another Tuesday.

If you’re looking for a Hudson newborn photographer who knows that real babies come with real surprises (and prepares plenty of extra blankets), I’d love to help you capture this incredible season—messes, giggles, sleepy snuggles, and all.
