Merrimack NH Cake Smash Photographer | ONEder the Sea

Turning ONE is kind of a big deal in the life of a Merrimack Cake Smash Photographer.

You survived the newborn stage. You survived the sleep deprivation. You survived the phase where your baby apparently needed to be held 23 hours a day.

And now you get to celebrate with cake.

Honestly, I think that’s a pretty solid reward.

This little guy’s first birthday session was an ONEder the Sea themed cake smash, complete with an adorable ocean-inspired setup and, of course, a cake that was eventually going to be completely destroyed.

Because that’s the point, right?

ONEder the Sea Cake Smash

First birthday sessions are one of my favorite things to photograph because one-year-olds are basically impossible to predict.

Some babies see a cake and immediately go to town.

Some delicately poke it with one finger.

Some look at me like I’ve personally offended them by putting frosting in front of them.

And some are just here for the decorations.

There is no wrong way to do it.

Let’s be honest, once the cake comes out, the session can go in approximately 47 different directions. So, we did our best to work through his hangry energy to get some family, sibling and simple portraits.

But once we got to the cake, it was clear what he came here for.

Cake Smash Photos Are About More Than the Cake

Yes, the cake is fun.

But the cake isn’t really the most important part.

Your baby is ONE.

That’s the part you’ll want to remember.

The little cheeks. The tiny hands. The expressions. The ridiculous amount of personality packed into one very small human.

The cake is just there to make things more interesting.

And considerably messier.

That’s why I like to include portraits before the cake smash. We can get those classic first birthday images while your little one is still relatively clean and interested in what we’re doing.

Then we bring out the cake and let the chaos happen.
