Newborn Photography With a 5-Pound Baby: What Makes Tiny Babies So Special

As a Bedford newborn Photographer, I know that there are newborns and then there are tiny newborns.

Baby B weighed just 5 pounds, which is basically newborn photography’s way of saying, “Here, make everything extra adorable.” 😂

As a newborn photographer, I get to photograph babies of all different sizes, personalities, and opinions about my carefully planned photo setups. Because apparently newborns did not receive the memo that we have a schedule.

But there is something pretty special about photographing a baby this tiny.

Just How Tiny Is 5 Pounds?

Pretty tiny.

When you’re holding a 5-pound baby next to a grown adult, the size difference is kind of ridiculous. Their little fingers disappear into your hand. Their entire body can curl up into places that seem impossible. And suddenly, even the smallest details become a big deal.

The tiny toes.

The wrinkly fingers.

The little lips.

The ridiculous amount of hair.

Baby B had some seriously good hair, by the way.

These are the details that parents may not fully appreciate right now because they’re probably running on approximately three hours of sleep. But someday, those tiny details are going to be the things they desperately want to remember.

Tiny Babies Make Everything Look Even Tinier

One of my favorite things about photographing smaller babies is seeing just how little they really are.

A tiny baby wrapped up snugly looks even tinier.

A tiny baby tucked into Dad’s arms? Adorable.

A tiny baby next to a parent? Suddenly you realize just how incredibly small they were.

And that’s one of the reasons I love including parent and family photographs in newborn sessions.

Yes, we want the pretty posed pictures.

But we also want the photographs that show scale.

Because someday your 5-pound baby is going to be the kid who raids your refrigerator, leaves shoes in the middle of the hallway, and somehow needs a snack approximately six minutes after dinner.

You’re going to look back at these pictures and wonder how they were ever that small.

Sometimes.

Every baby is different, and I don’t approach a newborn session with a checklist of poses that every baby has to complete.

Especially with a tiny baby, I’m paying attention to how they’re settling, how they’re positioned, and what they’re comfortable doing.

Some poses work beautifully.

Some don’t.

And some babies have very strong opinions about both.

That’s okay.

Sometimes it means changing the setup.

Sometimes it means moving on to something else entirely.

And sometimes it means stopping for a snack because newborns, inconveniently, still need to eat.

When a baby is this small, it’s easy to focus on the big picture.

But some of my favorite newborn photographs are the little ones.

A hand wrapped around Dad’s finger.

Tiny toes.

A sleepy face.

The top of a head covered in ridiculously good newborn hair.

The way a baby fits into Mom or Dad’s arms.

Those photographs don’t necessarily scream “look at this amazing pose!”

They’re quieter.

But years from now, they can become some of the most meaningful images in the gallery.

Because they’re reminders of something you can never get back:

exactly how tiny your baby was.

A 5-pound baby next to older siblings is pretty much guaranteed to make everyone look at the baby and say, “How is that even possible?”

Baby B had older sisters, which made those size comparisons even more fun.

And family photographs don’t have to be perfectly posed to be meaningful.

Some of my favorite images are simply about everyone being together.

The siblings.

The grandparents.

The people who were completely exhausted and completely in love at the same time.

Those are the photographs that become part of your family’s history.

Choosing a Bedford Newborn Photographer

If you’re looking for a Bedford newborn photographer, one of the most important things to look for is someone who understands that every baby is different.

Your baby may be 5 pounds.

Your baby may be 9 pounds.

Your baby may sleep like a dream.

Or your baby may decide that sleeping is an absolutely terrible idea the day of your session.

None of that means your photographs won’t be beautiful.

A good newborn session isn’t about making your baby fit into a predetermined plan.

It’s about working with the baby you actually brought home.

And yes, that includes the tiny ones.

Because five pounds may be small…

but somehow, they manage to take up an absolutely enormous amount of space in your heart.

And eventually, in your refrigerator, your living room, your car, and probably your entire house.

But that’s a problem for future you.

For now, let’s remember those tiny toes.

Of course, not every newborn arrives at 5 pounds.

Some babies show up weighing 10 pounds and looking like they already have a mortgage payment.

These big newborns are just as much fun to photograph. They have those deliciously chubby cheeks, chunky little legs, and hands that actually look like they might belong to a human who could eventually operate a remote control.

And while a 10-pound baby might not give you quite the same “How is this entire person this tiny?” reaction, they have their own kind of newborn squish that is pretty hard to resist.

Tiny or Chunky, Every Baby Is Different

That’s really the fun part of newborn photography. There isn’t one perfect newborn size, and there definitely isn’t one perfect newborn session.

Some babies are tiny and curled up like little potatoes. Others are already sporting cheeks that deserve their own zip code.

Some sleep through everything.

Others would like to personally supervise the entire session.

As a Bedford newborn photographer, I don’t expect every baby to fit into the same mold. I photograph the baby who actually showed up. Whether they’re 5 pounds, 10 pounds, or somewhere in between, those little details are what make their photographs uniquely theirs.

Because you only get one chance to remember just how this baby looked.

And whether they were tiny enough to disappear into Dad’s arms or already giving everyone a workout, they were never going to be this little again.

This perfectly proportioned 5 pound-er was such a good boy for me! I could hardly believe how squishy he was considering he was such a peanut. Please don’t even get me started on his hair. I had long ago decided I peaked as a Bedford newborn photographer in the hair department. My very first newborn session ever (https://nutterphotography.com/2019/04/18/a-scroll-down-memory-lane/) was with a baby boy who had the most perfect natural faux hawk. This guy however is battling for first place. The photos honestly don’t do his wild, spikey do justice, trust me it is adorable!
