Here’s what usually happens instead.
Someone else immediately needs a snack.
Your toddler decides today is the day they absolutely will not wear pants.
Dad is wondering how much longer this is going to take.
And at least one child is determined to sprint directly into the ocean fully clothed.
Honestly?
That’s exactly how most of my beach sessions start.
And somehow…
We still end up with the photos everyone frames..
This recent session made me long to go back and do a full session with each one of my kids at this age. Unfortunately, there are not second chances. They really are only little for a little while.
The Secret? Your Kids Don’t Have To Be Perfect.
I know social media makes it look like every family shows up calm, coordinated, and ready to smile on command.
Spoiler alert…
They don’t.
The best beach family photos happen when everyone stops trying so hard and trust that your Salisbury Beach Family Photographer has a plan and that it will all work out.
Kids will need to explore.
Toddlers to ignore me.
I expect someone to cry for between 2 and 57 minutes.
I also expect those same kids to laugh, cuddle, chase waves (or me!), climb on the rocks, and give mom the hug she’ll remember forever.
That’s the stuff worth photographing.
Your Kids Are Allowed To Be Kids – Salisbury Beach Photos
Parents apologize to me constantly.
“I’m so sorry. He’s wild.”
“She has a hard time listening, sometimes.”
“I promise they’re usually better than this.”
Meanwhile…I’m over her thinking, “this is going great.”
Kids move, they play, sometimes they pretend to be puppies for no explainable reason, and they always have opinions (usually very strong opinions).
We walk, play games, and resort to potty humor because it is fun and kids are all about the fun.
Sometimes we race. Sometimes we let your toddler collect seventeen seashells before taking another picture.
That’s not ruining the session.
That IS the session.
At Salisbury Beach, Wind happens.
Hair blows.
Dresses fly.
Babies eat sand.
It’s beach photography.
If you wanted perfectly controlled hair, we’d meet inside a Target.
Instead, you chose the beach because it’s beautiful.
And beautiful isn’t always perfect.
Sometimes the wind creates movement that makes your photos even better.
Sometimes your child laughs because your hair is attacking their face.
Guess what?
As a Salisbury Beach Family Photographer who has spent hours in photoshop ensuring I get that one perfect wall worthy photo, I can attest that the imperfect ones are often the ones that become everyone’s favorite images.
Dad Doesn’t Have To Love Pictures
I have yet to meet a dad who says,
“You know what sounds amazing? Family photos.”
Most of them are just here because someone booked the session.
Usually Mom.
The goal is hopefully by the end?
They’re chasing kids, laughing, throwing them in the air, and actually having fun.
We try to keep things moving because nobody—especially Dad—wants to stand in one spot smiling for an hour.

The kids finally relax.
Parents stop worrying.
Shoes come off.
The water gets involved.
Someone gets a little wet.
And that’s when the magic happens.
The photos people hang above the fireplace?
They’re rarely the perfectly posed ones.
They’re the ones where your family is actually being your family.

Not perfection.

Definitely not clean feet.
