Photographer Goes to Disney World: My Honest Experience

Well, we did it—this photographer went to Disney World, and now it’s officially behind us. There were truly some wonderful moments throughout the trip, and I’m so glad we experienced it together as a family. However, if I’m being completely honest, I walked away with one big realization: I might not be a Disney person.

To begin with, I had been dealing with a back injury for the past 4–5 months. Because of that, the physical demands of the trip were more challenging than I expected. We packed a lot into seven days, including four theme parks and a Halloween party. As a result, there was constant walking, standing, and very little downtime. By the end of each day, I was feeling it.

At the same time, I kept searching for that “Disney magic” everyone talks about. Instead, much of the experience felt rushed. There was the pressure to secure reservations and fast passes, followed by the need to get to each park as early as possible. Then came the effort to find the best spots in lines or the perfect place to watch shows and parades. As a photographer, I also wanted to capture meaningful photos, which added another layer of stress to an already busy schedule.

That said, my kids had an amazing time, and that truly matters most to me. Seeing their excitement and joy made many of the challenges worth it. Still, I couldn’t help but wonder if they would have been just as happy doing something simpler. A week at a place like Canobie Lake or even relaxing at a local pool might have offered the same joy with far less stress, time, and cost.

In the end, I believe everyone should spend their time and money on what brings them happiness. For many families, Disney is exactly that, and I completely understand the appeal. But for me, as a photographer who went to Disney World, I think our future vacations may look a little different—and a little more relaxed.
